Whether you dyed your hair firetruck red, flamingo pink, or sapphire blue, color treated hair requires some extra effort to last longer. Nothing’s worse than getting your hair dyed at the salon and having it fade within the week because of a lack of proper maintenance.

Here’s how you can take care of your brightly dyed hair:

Wait 72 hours before shampooing your hair

The cuticle layer of your hair opens up when you’re coloring it, allowing the dye to penetrate the hair shaft. If you wash your hair right after your color treatment, you risk washing the color out of the open cuticle and right down the drain. It can take around 2-3 days for the cuticle to close completely, making it better to avoid washing your hair during this time to allow the color pigment to soak in.

Use sulfate-free hair products

Sodium laureth sulfate is an anionic detergent usually found in personal care products. It helps produce a foaming effect, which can strip moisture and natural oils, as well the beautiful color from your hair. Look for sulfate-free products that are aimed towards color treated hair!

Add some dye into your conditioner

Add a little bit of hair dye into your conditioner when you’re washing your hair to deposit color and maintain vibrancy without having to go in for frequent salon visits. It’s a great way of keeping the color looking fresh until your roots start growing out.

Wash your hair with cool water

While we understand the appeal of hot showers, they’re really not good for your dyed hair. Hot water opens up the hair’s cuticle, washing out the pigment as your shampoo and condition your hair. Use cool water when you’re rinsing your hair off to allow the color to last longer.

Don’t wash your hair too often

Washing your hair every day isn’t the best for its health, and it’s even worse for individuals with brightly dyed hair. You wash away natural, moisturizing oils that keep your looking healthy, as well as a little bit of hair dye every time. Try to regulate your hair washing schedule to no more than 2-3 times a week. Invest in some dry shampoo if your roots start looking extra greasy.
